Focals

Thalmic Labs · 2015 archived

Focals were smart glasses with a display built into the lens, lit by a small projector in the arm. The wearer could read the time, a message or a direction without picking up a phone.

Focals looked like ordinary glasses, with a display hidden in the lens.

I was an intern at Thalmic Labs in Kitchener for four months, early in 2015. I worked on their first AR glasses, and on wristbands that read muscle signals through the skin.

Thalmic became North, and Google bought North in June 2020. Focals was wound down. I worked on the same problem again ten years later.
